The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed that Thomas Smiley, a 60 year old from California, was killed by a shark. Smiley swam 60 yards out when the incident happened. It is unsure what happened. Smiley was unconscious when he was picked up by a jet ski, and later died at the beach. Smiley missed a lower leg. The most likely species involved was a tiger shark.
